Byodo-in

"In 1180, at the Uji Bridge, there was a huge battle (Ujigawa Battle) between Minamoto (Genji )Troops and Taira (Heike) Troops. Minamoto Yorimasa and Tsuen Masahisa both fought there. Unfortunately, the Minamoto Troops lost so Yorimasa committed ritual suicide 'Harakiri' at a special place called 'Ougi no shiba'" - Tsuen Tea

"Today, the Phoenix Hall is virtually all that remains and Byodoin is one of the few examples of Heian temple architecture left in Japan. Japan has commemorated the longevity and cultural significance of Byodoin by displaying its image on the 10 yen coin. The Phoenix Hall, the great statue of Amida inside it, and several other items at Byodoin are Japanese National Treasures." - Sacred Destinations

"Its graceful appearance conjures up a paradise dreamed of by the Heian aristocracy. The garden, designated as a special place of scenic beauty, is a relic of the Heian Period. This majestic garden centers around Phoenix Hall, Ajiike Pond and incorporates the surrounding natural scenery, including the clear water of the Uji River and the mountains in front." - VisitKyoto
